“This year we started our tour at Springbok and ended at Groot Brakrivier. We visited three prisons on the way,” say this year’s tour members of Athletes for Christ.
Rev. André O’Kennedy, the tour dad, went into the Springbok and Upington prisons with the athletes to deliver a message of hope to the prison inmates. Team members sang songs and said they “could absolutely see and feel the presence of God”. The tour group said: “It was amazing how each prisoner remained passionate about God, regardless of their circumstances.”
Rev. André’s love for telling stories was contagious and put a smile on everyone’s face. Their willingness to learn more about God was so inspiring, and their faces got brighter every time Rev. André asked: “Can I tell one more story?”
“Near our first weekend village, Douglas, we received Bibles to give to people who need them. The prison inmates were so excited when we gave them Bibles and booklets. It was a very special experience,” says Surita van Zyl, the group’s tour leader.
Unfortunately, this year’s tour group could not visit the Graaff-Reinett prison due to administrative complications. However, the team left behind the rest of the Bibles and booklets for the prisoners. The prison visits were very special and they made a big difference in the lives of this year’s tour group.
